About “Gate | Heke I”

In South Africa, all game reserves are fenced, physically separating civilization and wilderness. This piece represents the gate, the last barrier, you must pass through before you journey into The Bushveld.

Gate = “Heke” in Tsonga, the predominant African language from the region in which these tracks were collected.

Artist’s Note

“As the first piece of The Bushveld Series, I wanted ‘Gate’ to have a quiet gravity. My goal for this painting was to create something solid and reserved, but with hints that there is more beyond it. Personally, it is one of my favorite pieces of the series.”
