About “Vuhuma Dyambu”
Dawn in the bush. A red African sun splits the dark sky into warm shades of orange and rose — light mirrored off of the smooth surface of a water hole beneath. The birds cry out and lions roar in the distance. It signals not only daybreak but a ritual shift, as nocturnal creatures start to bed down and diurnal animals stretch to find a new day before them.
Sunrise = “Vuhuma Dyambu” in Tsonga, the predominant African language from the region in which these tracks were collected.

Artist’s Note
“Vuhuma Dyambu was a painting I knew that I wanted to create from the start of the series. The idea was to portray the sun rising over water - a frequent and relished sight during my time in the bush. It is a departure somewhat from the intricate styling of the other pieces in the series, but I like how that allows a greater focus on the tracks themselves. This is the best painting for appreciating the ‘thumbprint pattern’ of an elephant foot, the bizarre 3 toes of a rhino track, or the sheer size of a giraffe hoof.”
