About “Inhale | Hefemula”
Respiration is a foundational function of life, whether plant or animal. There is an inflow of energy and an outflow. Inhale/exhale. Eat/Excrete. Life/Death. This is the basic rhythm of our world and it can only be accomplished in orchestra - there are no soloists.
Inhale = “Hefemula” in Tsonga, the predominant African language from the region in which these tracks were collected.

Artist’s Note
“The idea for this painting came to me in a dream. I was standing in the center of the circle and could see this slow current of orange energy coming towards me, represented by the ungulate tracks above. At the same time, I could see my own spent energy flowing out from beneath me to be repurposed somewhere else, represented by the larger pattern in blue. It was a perfectly balanced exchange.”
